Viola betonicifolia, the arrow-leafed violet, forms perennial clumps of long elongated leaves up to 20cm or more. It flowers in Spring, the single flowers can be very variable in colour and are held aloft on long stems. It will self seed easily in the garden, it can even set seed without even opening a flower! ( a phenomenon called cleistogamy) It doesn't run like other violets but stays in clumps. If conditions are severe, like a long drought or very hard winter, it can die off above ground but will regrow later from its deep tap root.
It is the only host species for the endangered Australian Fritillary butterfly, although this butterfly is not naturally found in the Blue Mountains.
