This shrub, from 1 to 3 m tall with reddish stems, grows in wet forests. It bears separate male and female flowers on the one plant and then oval-shaped, red berries about 15–20 mm long which darken to deep purple when ripe. Although not the variety used commercially, the leaves and seeds still have a peppery flavour. Thanks to Peter Woodard for the photo.
