This small relative of the common Sydney Pittosporum is found naturally in a range of habitats, including dry and wet sclerophyll forest and rainforest margins, as well as rainforest and coastal shrublands, on a range of soils from sandy to loam as well as clay and volcanic.

In the garden it grows to a height between 1 and 4 metres, being about 1-2 metres wide. It is very attractive plant in flower as well as in fruit. Attractive to birds, butterflies and insects this fast-growing hedge or screen plant grows well in a sunny to dappled light situation, in most soils. Please note it has limited frost tolerance so is more suited to mid to lower mountains in sheltered areas. It has been recorded from Faulconbridge, Kurrajong and along the north slopes of the Grose Valley
