This upright spreading shrub can eventually reach to 6m or more. It flowers profusely in late winter and spring and may be fragrant. The spiky needles mean it is best kept out of areas of close traffic, but also mean it makes a great habitat for small birds, especially if planted in a small clump. Being in the Proteacea family it needs good drainage in sandy soil. It is also drought and frost hardy. Its large woody seedpods persist for several years.
