This handsome tree is a little too large for most gardens, growing to 30m or so, but if you have room it is a splendid addition to a rainforest or moist gully area. In the wild it is found in temperate rainforests on basalt soils at higher elevations, and sedimentary soils at lower elevations, commonly associated with Coachwood . Each thickish leaf can live up to 12 years and gives off a sassafras odour if crushed. The yellowish soft timber is used in floors, turnery, and cabinet work
