This rough tree fern can grow to heights of 12m, with individual fronds reaching 4m. The 'roughness' in its common name comes from the fronds, which are raspy along the rib compared to Dicksonia which are softly hairy. Provided moisture levels remain high, it will tolerate frost and even full sun once established. It also makes a good container plant.
It is ecologically important as it provides the nesting substrate for Exoneura robusta, a native species of reed bee. These bees build their nests almost exclusively in the pith of dead Cyathea australis fronds. This species of bee is an important pollinator of many other plants in southeastern Australia.
