The Smooth-barked Apple is often considered to be one of our most beautiful trees. In poorer soils it often has a fairly short trunk and a lovely branched form. In November the grey bark, which has developed over winter, peals off in flakes. The trunk gradually becomes a mottled pink/grey and finally rejoices in its glorious summer rusty- orange attire.
Other characteristic points of this tree are that the leaves are opposite, the buds have no operculum, the flowers have small petals and the fruits are slightly square and ribbed.
Found in the lower-mid mountains in sandstone areas it adds to its glory in December-January with large white clusters of flowers at the end of the branches.
Please note: we have found that this tree does not usually do well above Bullaburra in the Blue Mountains.
