Acacia implexa, commonly called the Hickory Wattle, is an erect or spreading tree 5–12 m high, which often suckers freely, making it very useful in some areas for erosion control. Its grey or brownish bark is hard and smooth, becoming corrugated or fissured at the base over time. Its masses of round cream flower heads give a wonderful display in summer, followed by twisty curly brown seed pods which hold a delicacy much sought after by Crimson Rosellas. Can be trimmed lightly each year to limit height and encourage flowering.
Hickory Wattles flower in midsummer, a time when most other wattles have finished flowering and so they help to sustain so many wild creatures, birds and insects through the season. The foliage of this very versatile tree can be used for dyeing cloth, the bark for tanning leather and the wood for furniture, tool handles or excellent, long burning firewood.
